See The Mate is built by a small team of chess players who wanted a serious analysis tool without a paywall, a daily cap, or a login wall standing between a game and its review.
See The Mate is a browser-based chess analysis and puzzle platform. Paste a game or search a chess.com or Lichess username, and the Stockfish 18 engine reviews every move — flagging blunders, grading accuracy, and suggesting better lines — the same kind of review you'd get from a paid "game review" feature on other sites, minus the paywall and the daily limit.
Most chess analysis tools run the engine on a server, which costs money per analysis and is the reason free accounts on other sites get capped at one review a day. See The Mate takes a different approach: Stockfish is compiled to WebAssembly and runs directly inside your browser tab, on your own device. There's no server doing the calculation, so there's no per-analysis cost to recoup — which means no reason to ever put full analysis behind a paywall.
See The Mate is built and maintained by a small team of chess players and developers, not a large company. Features get added when they'd genuinely help someone reviewing a game — not to chase engagement metrics. Bug reports and feature requests from actual players shape the roadmap more than anything else.
The site is a React application that talks to the public chess.com and Lichess APIs to pull games, and to Lichess's open puzzle database for the puzzle trainer. Move classification (Brilliant, Best, Mistake, Blunder, and so on) is computed by comparing each move played against Stockfish's own best move at that position, the same centipawn-loss approach used across the chess software world. Because the engine runs client-side, your games and positions are evaluated on your device and never uploaded anywhere for analysis.
The plan is simple: keep every analysis and puzzle feature free forever, keep improving accuracy and speed, and add the features chess players actually ask for — remote two-player games, deeper opening explanations, and more puzzle themes are all on the list.
